You
find that the real-time, fully-engaged nature of pairing means that
problems get found and worked on much faster.

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

The benefits are more compelling still when you pair up people with radically different – but overlapping – skillsets.

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

Finally, a shout-out with thanks to @dorkitude for asking the question
about how strict we are in our application of ‘pair programming’.
Cheers!

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

And their colleague might well be able to solve it in seconds, due to their different background.

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

Both work on a piece of code.

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

And their colleague might well be able to solve it in seconds, due to their different background.

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

Interesting video

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

Nice! Here at Yuuguu, we upped the speed of screen sharing and mouse control to make the remote control aspect that bit slicker; but really I prefer the 'one does the typing, one does the blue sky thinking' kind of approach. I would say the voice link is more critical to the way we work here, as the discussions around the issues have the real value; That's where the knowledge transfer and challenge/validation occurs, more so than simply grabbing the keys when you've got an idea.

But yes - remote pairing works well, and we gain a lot from using it. It's up there in my personal tool kit with unit testing, automated refactoring, and auto code completion
as something that really helps propel development.

Re: Remote Pair Programming with Yuuguu

First, I'd like to say congratulations on practicing remote pair programming, and writing (and using) software to support it! Remote pair programming is a vastly underrated practice. I should know -- I remote pair for 8 hours each day, every day of the week.

That said, I tried YuuGuu for remote pair programming and found it far too slow for fully collaborative pair programming. I think many who practice remote pair programming adopt the "driver" and "navigator" pattern strictly because their screen sharing software is too slow to support two fully engaged programmers. Fast enough software does exist, but I've only found it in one place: "Screen Sharing.app" and iChat on Macs.

I wrote about this quite a bit on my blog and even posted videos: http://40withegg.com/remote... and http://40withegg.com/remote...

Note in the videos that I am Apple's built in "Screen Sharing.app" (a variation of the VNC protocol) and that the screen you see us writing code in is not my local screen: it's my pair's screen 2500 miles away. In the videos I am coding remotely on his computer with very litte lag -- I'd say near-instant response. In contrast, multiple seconds passed I saw updates YuuGuu.

Thus, I applaude your effort, and encourage you to increase your full-collaboration response time by at least an order of magnitude. Perhaps I'll try YuuGuu for web seminars. Thanks!
